Larry
Ravitz has been in the building and renovation business for over 25
years. His career began with Edward Rose & Sons in Kalamazoo, Michigan,
one of the largest privately owned apartment building companies in
the United States. Ravitz supervised the construction of over 400
apartment units and town houses with Ed Rose & Sons. Independently,
he bought and restored the historic Hartford House hotel (built in
1871) in Hartford, a site now on the Michigan Register of Historic
Sites.
In 1986, Larry moved to Takoma Park, Maryland, where he purchased
the Wedgewood Apartments, a 46 unit complex which was in a state of
serious deterioration. He completely renovated the building, turning
it into one of the most desirable apartment buildings in Takoma Park.
In 1991 Mr. Ravitz purchased Montgomery Gardens Apartments out of
bankruptcy. This South Silver Spring property was also in a state
of serious deterioration. Twenty of its eighty units had been condemned
prior to the purchase. It had also become a nuisance in the community
due to criminal enterprise in many of the remaining units. Ravitz
renovated the entire property, again making it into one of the most
desirable rental properties in the greater Silver Spring area.
In 1996, Mr. Ravitz acquired Suburban Hill Apartments, a distressed
158 unit complex in the Langley Park area of Silver Spring. This area
had one of the highest rates of crime and transience in suburban Maryland.
Again Mr. Ravitz succeeded in turning this anchor property into a
beautifully restored, safe, and functional apartment building which
has lent immeasurably toward stabilizing the entire Quebec Terrace
community. The management of the building has drawn upon residents,
many of them recent immigrants to the United States. Mr. Ravitz is a resident of Takoma Park, Maryland
and a founder of The Gateway Coalition.
