Anthony R. Giancola, P. E.
Tony Giancola was born in Brisbane, Australia and raised in Syracuse, New York graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1967. In 1974 he completed his graduate education from the University of Pittsburgh with dual degrees: a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering, and a Master of Public Works Engineering and Administration.
His twenty year active duty career in the Civil Engineer Corps, U. S. Navy, achieving the rank of Commander, included tours in the Public Works (6 tours including two as Director and two as Assistant Director), Contracts, Seabees and two staff civil engineer tours.
Since retirement from active duty, he has worked as a Principal Engineer, Advanced Technology, Inc.; Public Works Director, City of Takoma Park, Maryland from 1988 to 1990; and Bureau Chief (Chief Engineer) of two bureaus in the Public Works Department, Frederick County, Maryland (Highways & Transportation and Program Development & Management) from 1990 - 1993. He has served as the Executive Director, National Association of County Engineers since October 1993.
He is a life member of the American Public Works Association with over 30 years membership, serving in 1996 as President of the VA/DC/MD Chapter, has served on the executive council of the APWA Institute of Transportation & in 1995 was the President of the IT, and from 1993 to 1995 as APWA representative on the National Quality Initiative Steering Committee. In addition, he is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, completing a term as President of the DC Chapter in 1993; the American Society of Civil Engineers; and the County Engineers Association of Maryland. He is chair of the Transportation Research Board Low Volume Roads Committee. Nationally he serves on the Roadway Safety Foundation Advisory Committee, the National Workzone Safety Information Clearinghouse, the AASHTO Technology Implementation Group and the AASHTO Task Force on Retroreflectivity. He is a licensed professional engineer in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Pennsylvania.
Married, he and his wife, Alice, reside in Washington, D. C. They have 3 grown daughters, Colleen, Megan, and Kierin and two grandchildren, Linnea and Gavin. Active in community activities he was the President of Plan Takoma, Inc., a non profit 501(c) 3 community organization in the District of Columbia from 1984 - 1998, is an appointed member of the DC Convention Center Community Advisory Committee, and is the current Vice President, Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation (founding board member), a 501c3 Community Development Corporation serving two jurisdictions, south Silver Spring, MD and Upper Georgia Avenue in the District of Columbia.
