Mission Statement

Founded in 1994, the Gateway Coalition works to promote inter jurisdictional understanding and to revitalize the Gateway Community along Georgia and Easter Avenues at the D.C. - Maryland border. The Coalition comprises civic, religious, and business associations from Montgomery County, the District of Columbia, and the City of Takoma Park. It aims to foster greater community cooperation, increased public safety, and a comprehensive urban revitalization program for the Gateway area in Upper Georgia Avenue and South Silver Spring.

Improvements that the Gateway Coalition has brought about include:

  • The rescue of the Juniper-Blair park land from development and the construction of a new playground on the site.

  • Complete reconstruction of Eastern Avenue and Blair Road, including new sidewalks and curbing.

  • A comprehensive business revitalization study for South Silver Spring by Montgomery County.

  • The decision of Montgomery College Board of Trustees to expand the Takoma Park Campus into South Silver Spring.

  • Improved code enforcement of rental apartment buildings in the Silver Spring central business district.

  • Improved cooperation between D.C. and Maryland police.

  • Establishment of the Gateway-Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation, a non-profit community development corporation funded by both District of Columbia and Montgomery County, Md.

The Gateway Coalition will continue its efforts to improve the quality of life for residents and businesses in the Gateway area of Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and the District of Columbia. We will spearhead the campaign to establish an arts-education and technology district in South Silver Spring and upper Ward 4, D.C. We will continue to press for capital improvements and business revitalization programs for power to strengthen the bonds of trust among the three great jurisdictions we represent and to make the Gateway area a vibrant community for people of all races, ages, income levels, and nationalities.
