The
Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park Library at 7420 Georgia Avenue,
N.W. opened in 1990. The distinctive structure (pictured at left)
was designed by the firm of Bryant and Bryant, Architects, the largest
minority-owned architecture firm in the City of Washington. The
building features interlocking geometrical shapes resembling clustered
towers and numerous, generously sized windows. The exterior façade
is "Calvert Rose" Brick. The building contains reading
rooms for children and adults, audio-visual facilities, an auditorium,
several meeting rooms, and exhibit space. The stacks capacity is
48,000 volumes.
The
Library is both a business resource center and a community hub.
Children's Librarian June Krill works on Kwanzaa cut-outs with child
patrons in the center photo. A children's play is staged in the
Library auditorium in the photo at right.
